2013 Acura RLX Concept

2013 Acura RLX Front View

The Acura RLX Concept shown at the 2012 New York auto show debut is yet another semi-concept from Honda. As seen before with the Civic, among others, what we see here is probably some 80-90% of what the replacement of the nearly-forgotten RL will look like when it arrives in showrooms. Acura hopes that the RLX will enjoy more success than its predecessor thanks in part to its sharper sheetmetal and all-new powertrain, the latter highlighted by a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Overall, the Acura RLX features a clean design. Its profile features a simple character line that gradually drops off at the front-fender. The over-stated giant rims are unlikely to make it to the production model, but the fancy taillights probably will. The same goes for the all-LED headlights and, perhaps unfortunately, the (in)famous beak grille.

Two powertrains will be offered in the RLX. The first will feature a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine with direct injection and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system with a combined output of 370 hp mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Acura says the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system “utilizes a unique dual electric motor drive unit with a bilateral torque adjustable control system to instantly generate negative or positive torque to the rear wheels during cornering.” Fuel economy is expected to be an impressive 30 mpg city and highway. The second option will be a simpler front-drive configuration with just a 310-hp engine. Topping off the mechanical highlights are a revised suspension with Amplitude Reactive Dampers, a stiffer body with more high-strength steel and aluminum, and revised electric steering.
Inside, the RLX will be loaded with a long list of flagship goodies including two LCD screens — one used as a display and one touch screen to control audio, navigation, and climate controls. The 14-speaker audio system will be capable of streaming Internet radio. Modern safety features include Collision Mitigation Braking System, Acura’s first Lane Keep Assist System, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning.
