The same Swat Valley that’s been so mercilessly raped by the barbaric Taliban is actually a serene idyllic place renowned for its natural beauty and ancient civilization. Swati woodworkers are highly skilled artisans that have been practicing the art of woodworking for centuries. Using their own traditional tools, they carve wondrous works of art out of the region’s famed deodar wood. The dark marble comes from Baluchistan, the largest province by area. Baluchistan is rich in all kinds of mineral resources, and Baluchi marble is used all over Pakistan to decorate facades and veneers of all kinds of buildings. Colors ranging from black, white through to green and even pink make Baluchi marble a low cost yet versatile building solution. What is it with the female form and marble? Indic poets often tend to metaphorically compare feminine beauty with the smooth, luxurious feel of marble. Smooth, yes, but definitely not as cold!

Mehndi is a function celebrated before the wedding day (barat). On the occasion friends and women relatives of the bride get together and apply mehndi on the hands of the bride. Multan, the ancient city of saints, is famous for its Sufi culture, awe-inspiring architecture and of course, the renowned sohn halwa. What we didnt know until now is that it had amazingly attractive inhabitants too!

Two beautiful Pakistani girls at a wedding. The venue appears to be one of the so called “marriage halls” that are prevalent across Pakistan. A peculiarity to the Land of the Pure, “marriage halls” are stand alone ballrooms dedicated solely to weddings and associated parties. This may be due to the fact that weddings are usually the only parties ever held in the country in public. These venues do brisk business all year round, more so in the winters.

At the Mehndi, the bride to be is decorated with beautiful body art created by using of mehndi or henna paste. Henna is a plant, the leaves of which are ground into a thick paste. It creates temporary body tattooes that are deep orange or rust coloured.
